The first time I was captured by this young lady’s Afro and overall style on Facebook, I knew I had to contact her. One word…Gorgeous. Meet Shadi.
Origins and current location?
I’m a Pretoria born and bred chika, however I currently reside in the Mother City.
What are you currently up to?
At the moment I’m busy with my studies at UCT towards a BSocSci Degree. And I have to tell you, I’m insanely excited about the prospects of graduating this year.
How long have you been natural? Briefly take us through your natural hair journey.
I’ve had an afro since high-school, which makes it just over 5 years now. The journey has been awesome, but like any journey moments of frustration always creep up on you. You’ll probably think this is crazy, but what I love most about my hair is the feeling I get from running my fingers through it, I love the feeling of coarse hair, and its okay if you understand it, my friends don’t get my fetish either.
Why did you decide to go natural?
The decision to go natural was a spontaneous one to be honest. I Guess it’s my freestyle nature, I like being different. But over and above my freestyle nature, I went all naturale because I was up to my eyeballs with the frustrations that come with chemically treating hair. I have very sensitive scalp, so that meant I’d always come back from the salon with patches of my scalp burnt.

What are the challenges and advantages since you went natural?
I love getting my hair braided, but one of the challenges of having natural hair is that some types of hair fibre don’t work well with natural hair. For instance I can’t do yaki with my afro because it just looks awful.

Advantages-natural hair is easy on the pocket, well depending on which salon you using.
What is your hair care regimen and what products do you use?
I don’t follow a strict hair regimen; however I do go to the salon for regular maintenance, Caivil hair products work wonders for my hair. I use Caivil mend and gro, Caivil shampoo and something a friend suggested Black Chic Hair Fertiliser. I enjoy braiding my own hair, but I leave it to the professional for treatment.

What’s your favourite natural hair salon?
I think Jabu Stone hair salons are amazing, because they are specialized, but I hate the fact that some of them are soo ridiculously priced. But then again it’s Jabu Stone.

What natural hairstyle(s) do you like to rock?
I love the frizzy look, when my hair is all curly, and because I love hairpieces, I like having my hair in a bun, or holding it up with Alice bands.
